In order to be able to exploit the lightweight construction potential of aluminum in the aerospace industry, scientists from Bremen, are involved in a project to further develop aluminum alloys for additive manufacturing.

During the two years of funding, the first step will be to further develop an already available high-performance alloy in such a way that it can also be used in space travel. At the same time, the scientists want to develop a novel aluminum alloy with similarly outstanding material properties as the already available high-performance alloy, but as a cost-effective alternative.

With both variants, the processes of selective laser melting and powder build-up welding are to be used to produce additively manufactured structural components for space travel. These components are load-bearing parts for launch vehicles that have to withstand extreme conditions and forces. In order to meet these requirements, the surface treatment of the components will also have to be taken into account. The results will be presented in a space demonstrator that will include all sub-steps of the project.

The project is funded by the ERDF-funded Bremen Aerospace Research Program 2020 with around one million euros. The companies involved are Ariane Group, Airbus, Materialise and Innojoin, as well as scientists from the Leibniz Institute for Material-Oriented Technologies (IWT) and the Alfred Wegener Institute (AWI). The project is one of the start-up projects for the Bremen Research and Development Center for Lightweight Materials and Technologies Ecomat, which is to be completed at the beginning of 2019.
