Aluminium alloys are widely used in many industrial applications including automobiles and aeroplanes, on account of their light weight. However, the wide-spread use of such alloys was contingent on the discovery of precipitate strengthening as a means for improving the tensile properties of these alloys necessary for most applications. Discovered over a hundred years ago, the technique involves heating alloys to elevated temperatures, which allows nanoscale secondary phases to precipitate in the metal. These precipitates hinder dislocation motion throughout the material and greatly increase their tensile strength. Now, however, Australian researchers led by Christopher Hutchinson at Monash University have developed a room-temperature cycling technique that reproduces and improve...

Engineers at Sandia National Laboratories have developed what they say is the most durable metal alloy ever created. Made up of a combination of platinum and gold, the new material is apparently 100 times more wear-resistant than high-strength steel, which makes it the first metal alloy to join the same class as diamond. Even better, it naturally produces its own lubricant that, under normal circumstances, is extremely fiddly and expensive to make.

Growing imports of manganese ore continued to buoy supplies of raw materials in 2018, even as environmental issues weighed on domestic production. Imports of manganese ore reached 22.08 million mt in January-October, compared to 21.26 million mt of total imports in 2017. This is likely to increase ore supplies by 15% year on year in 2018.
