Aluminium alloys are widely used in many industrial applications including automobiles and aeroplanes, on account of their light weight. However, the wide-spread use of such alloys was contingent on the discovery of precipitate strengthening as a means for improving the tensile properties of these alloys necessary for most applications. Discovered over a hundred years ago, the technique involves heating alloys to elevated temperatures, which allows nanoscale secondary phases to precipitate in the metal. These precipitates hinder dislocation motion throughout the material and greatly increase their tensile strength. Now, however, Australian researchers led by Christopher Hutchinson at Monash University have developed a room-temperature cycling technique that reproduces and improve...

There are two kinds of alloy steel – low-alloy steel and high-alloy steel. As mentioned earlier, the composition and proportion of alloying elements determine the various properties of alloy steel. Low-alloy steels are the ones which have up to 8% alloying elements whereas high-alloy steels have more than 8% alloying elements.

Steel is among the most popular materials used in the construction industry. According to the World Steel Association, in 2018 around 1,808 million tons of crude steel was produced worldwide and about 50% of this production was utilized by the construction industry. Further, they also state that there are as many as 3,500 different grades of steel and each grade offers environmental, c

A new tungsten-based alloy can withstand unprecedented amounts of radiation without damage. Essential for extreme irradiation environments such as the interiors of magnetic fusion reactors, previously explored materials have thus far been hobbled by weakness against fracture, but this new alloy seems to defeat that problem.
